A playthrough of Konami's 1989 platform action game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Castlevania: The Adventure.

It didn't quite make it out the gate for the launch of the Game Boy, but it was pretty exciting when Castlevania came out just before Christmas in 1989. What kid at that point didn't love Castlevania? And though granted, it is much different than Castlevania and Simon's Quest (the only CV games that had been released yet in the United States), but it still featured a close approximation of the super-stiff controls and the high difficulty level of its console counterpart. And contrary to what seems to be the current popular opinion, the game doesn't feel anywhere near as slow playing it on a real Game Boy as on an emulator. It was a good early attempt to keep the screen blur to a minimum, and I remember it worked quite well. Playing this through using the DMG shader, I'm reminded of that same feeling. For a console it would be just way too slow, but it feels just right on the tiny green Game Boy screen. Just my opinion, at least. Anyone else agree?

Hearts only give life now since the special weapons are gone, and this game focuses much more heavily on platforming than it does the clay, unlike the first two NES titles. It also loves to abuse you with the level design - I remember wanting to throw the Game Boy way back because of those sections with the moving spiked walls. The whole game is pretty easy once you know it, but it will certainly punish you over and over again until you've mastered the layout of each stage.

The music is awesome, and it is probably the best part of the game. There are some pretty classic renditions of some Castlevania soundtrack staples here. You'll get plenty of chances to hear the songs over and over, though. It might look like a short game when it's run through like this, but don't be fooled. It will take you quite awhile to get there if you're new to it. Once you have it down, though, it's just like riding a bike. You'll remember it by the sheer volume of blood and tears shed learning it.
