Donkey Kong (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Nintendo's 1994 Game Boy puzzle-platformer, Donkey Kong.
Played all the 100 levels of the main story mode in Super Game Boy mode. All SGB features, including the border, coloring, voice effects, and SNES music, are featured and accurate.
This was one of my favorite games when it was released. We were in the middle of moving, so my parents got my sister and I a few Game Boy games, and the Super Game Boy had just been released and was being advertised on TV. They thought that it looked like a great idea because we already had a good 20 or so Game Boy games at the time, so they picked up Tiny Toons 2, DK, and a SGB for us at the same time at Toys 'R Us, and we had such a blast going through them. It was REALLY cool at the time that you could just yank the cart out of the SNES and put it in the Game Boy and continue from your saved game - they didn't have to convince me so hard to turn off my games if we were going out after getting the Super Game Boy, because I could just continue in the car.
Donkey Kong was really a phenomenal effort on the Game Boy. Duh, I guess, since Miyamoto headed development. It looks fantastic on either machine, but the SGB enhancements are really well done. The screams of "Help!" and the ending credit theme are particularly cool improvements, and there is a lot of versatility in the controls. Even though it all builds on the original arcade game, it's amazing how effectively they fleshed it out to make this feel like a brand-new game while keeping the feel familiar to fans of the arcade game.
It deserves massive credit, as well, for not needing a tutorial or a manual with how many moves there are. The fun little cinematics that play after every 4 stages tell you everything you need to know. It's so intuitive and non-intrusive, so seamless that it never pulls you out the game for an instant. Why didn't more games adopt this approach?
This is also the first time that Donkey Kong wears his iconic red tie!
