Android 14 Update: Enhanced Taskbar Control on Tablets and Foldables
Hold onto your seats, Android enthusiasts! A groundbreaking Android 14 beta discovery has just surfaced, and it hints at something truly revolutionary from Google. Brace yourself for the possibility of customizing a crucial part of your Android device's display like never before!
In a surprising twist, Mishaal Rahman from Android Police stumbled upon a flag that reveals Google's potential plans to allow users to choose their preferred taskbar on tablets and foldables. This amazing find, called ENABLE_TASKBAR_PINNING, was uncovered during the deep dive into Android 14 Beta 3, which rolled out earlier this month. It suggests that Google might introduce behavioral options like "persistent" and "transient" for the taskbar, giving users full control over their device's interface.
As Rahman pointed out, the current method to access this option is by long-pressing an empty space on the taskbar, which offers two choices: "always show taskbar" or "change navigation mode." It seems that the former is the key to quickly customizing the taskbar to your liking.
Unfortunately, the flag to switch between taskbars is not enabled by default in the latest experimental version. So, in the current beta version, users can only tinker with the transient taskbar.
While it's unclear when Google will make this feature more stable, its inclusion with the launch of Android 14 would be a game-changer, especially considering the recent release of the Pixel Tablet and the Pixel Fold. Some may recall the introduction of the transient taskbar during the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 rollout. This version allows users to swipe up from the bottom of their devices to access Android's suggested apps based on their habits.
However, this update marked a departure from Android 12L's persistent taskbar, which always remained at the bottom of the display, accommodating up to six apps of the user's choice. The persistent taskbar streamlined multitasking, as users could effortlessly swap apps with a tap or engage in split-screen mode, boosting efficiency.
While Google has already achieved a major milestone in Android 14's development, the recent release of Android 14 Beta 3.1 swiftly addressed critical issues with certain Pixel devices. The launch of Android 14 is expected in August, but we still have a few beta versions left before the stable release graces our fingertips.
