Andromeda Galaxy and its collision with the Milky Way
A new study suggests that there is a 50% chance that the Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda galaxy within the next 10 billion years. Previously, scientists believed that such a collision was virtually inevitable and would occur in about 5 billion years, but new simulations indicate that the fate of our galaxy is still up in the air.
If the merger happens, the two galaxies will form a single gigantic structure, possibly called "Milkomeda". However, there is also a chance that they will simply pass close to each other without completely merging.
