Sixth mass extinction is already occurring on Earth
Mass extinction is a phenomenon in which a large number of species disappear in a short geological period of time. Throughout Earth's history, there have been at least five major mass extinctions, the most famous being the one that led to the disappearance of the dinosaurs.
Currently, scientists warn that we are experiencing a sixth mass extinction, driven mainly by human activities such as deforestation, pollution and climate change. The rate of species extinction today is alarming, with around 27,000 species disappearing annually, a number much higher than the natural rate of extinction.
This process can lead to the collapse of entire ecosystems, affecting global biodiversity and even the survival of humanity itself.
