Anto RetroGamer Quick Plays: Virtua Fighter Animation (SEGA Game Gear) ✔
Anto RetroGamer Quick Plays: Virtua Fighter Animation on the SEGA Game Gear, and released on the SEGA Master System as a Brazil exclusive by Tec Toy. Developed by the now-defunct Aspect Co., and published by SEGA in 1996, Virtua Fighter Animation is a spin-off from the main Virtua Fighter series and based off the anime series, as the name suggests. The English-language version of the game underwent some revision to be more accessible to a western audience, and is not completely faithful to the original anime.

Virtua Fighter Animation differs from other games in the series, using cutscenes to advance the story of which the fights are built around. A total of eight characters appear in the main story, which can be unlocked to play in "VS COM": Akira Yuki, Pai Chan, Lau Chan, Wolf Hawkfield, Kage-Maru, Sara Bryant, Jacky Byrant, and Dural. All of these unlocked characters can be used in VS Mode for multi-player with a Gear-to-Gear Cable.
Virtua Fighter Animation also has a unique way to view the battle arena: Normal, Large and Realtime. I chose Realtime here for a close-up view. The screen zooms in close when the two fighters, and zooms out when a certain distance away. The game uses a mix of large and small sprites to represent distance, while keeping the game relatively smoothly. Enjoy footage of the first act of Virtua Fighter Animation, and the subsequent battle with Pai Chan. The scenario seems a little far-fetched for a random fight to me!
Virtua Fighter Animation would be released late into the SEGA Game Gear lifespan under the SEGA 'Kid's Gear' brand in Japan. These games were marketed to a younger audience, with colourful graphics and simplistic gameplay. Virtua Fighter Animation being an exception, many of these games would never be released outside of Japan, and the SEGA Game Gear would be discontinued worldwide in 1997.
