Anto RetroGamer Quick Plays: Tails Skypatrol for the SEGA Game Gear. Co-developed by SIMS and JSH, Tails Skypatrol was released exclusively for Japan in 1995, but later got a Western release on Sonic compilations such as Sonic Gems Collection, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic PC Collection, and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. Tails Skypatrol was one of two SEGA Game Gear games featuring Miles "Tails" Prower as the main character. The other being Tails Adventure released the same year to a worldwide market.

Tails Skypatrol is a spin-off game from the Sonic franchise, and plays as an on-rail adventure type game. Rather then collect rings, Tails has a ring that can be used as an offensive weapon and grab onto certain obstacles to reach certain paths and items. Rather then a health system akin to the main Sonic games, you have a flight meter which drains over time. Collecting Mint Candy restores this, but depleting it will see Tails lose a life, as will hitting the ground or wall for an instant death. Getting hit will merely stun Tails, but tapping the '2' button will recover your trajectory. Getting hit repeatedly by enemy attacks serves no additional penalty.

Here is my Tails Skypatrol footage of the 'Training Area', which is a beta-test of sorts of many of the game's assets -and how to use them. Items can only be picked up with the ring Tails has, including mine carts, weights and balloons that may raise or drop Tails' to reach certain areas. This Training Area still counts towards your score, as well as any extra lives picked up along the way. This is literally the only mode in Tails Skypatrol, so the replay value is zero unless you fancy a quick blast through it from time to time.
