Ninety eight years ago today, one of the first world war's most tragic episodes, the battle of Gallipoli, was fought.

It was the first major campaign in which Australian and New Zealand soldiers took part - and the heavy losses those nations sustained, as they fought with the allies, have been remembered on this day ever since.
