The Collectables is a new free action game for iOS and Android, which is the result from a collaboration between Crytek and DeNA. The German development studio Crytek is famous for its outstanding graphics engine CryEngine, which has been used in their blockbuster-games Far Cry and Crysis on PC and console. With The Collectables Crytek brings a stripped-down version of the graphics engine for mobile platforms.

There is no doubt The Collectables has been inspired by famous action movies like Rambo or The Expendables. You control a squad of mercenaries through a jungle or city environment and have to complete various jobs. Sometimes you have to get secret informations, then you have to save people or you just have to blow up everything that is in your way. In generall the missions are very short, but as you progress through the game, the missions become a bit longer. The controls are rather unusual for an action title and are executed through tapping only. A simple tap moves all your mercenaries to the desired position. However, you can navigate a single mercenarie to specific locations by simply drawing a line from one of your team-members to the desired place. The crosshair turns blue if your soldier can go there for cover. Your mercenaries will fire automatically on all aproaching enemies, so the fights take place easily.

For The Collectables the developers have mixed the action genre with a trading card game. This means that the game is also about getting trading cards. There are mercenary cards and skill cards in the game. With the help of skill cards you can for example heal wounded team members, create a confusing hologram for enemies or throw grenades at the enemy. Before every level you choose which cards you want to take with you. You will be introduced to the card-theme and so it is not too confusing. In the levels you can simply drag the cards from the bottom of the screen to the position where you want to use them. If you want to throw a grenade at the enemy you simple have to drag the card from the bottom of the screen onto the enemy. In every mission you can use a card only once, so a little strategic thinking is required . During the game your deck of cards will increase continuously and you can upgrade mercenary cards with the help of fuel - the in game currency.

My conclusion:
You can recognize the Crytek-roots in The Collectables without a doubt. The game is relatively simple, easy to use and offers plenty of action. The graphics are Crytek-typical outstanding and impressive across the board with great textures, waving grass and excellent lighting effects. But in terms of gameplay The Collectables has not completely convinced me. I miss a little depth and dynamic. Of course there are different skill cards, but the missions don't differ so much. Also I don't like cards-concept, but that may be because I 'm generally not a big fan of collectible card games. Personally, I 'd just like to see a classic first-person shooter from Crytek for mobile platforms. Regardless of that The Collectables still has much to offer and is among the highlights of the week. Positive is that I made good progress through the game without any InApp purchases, but that could change the longer one plays the game. Please post your experience with the game into the comments. -
