Beyond Space is a new space shooter from Bulkypix, which is on the trail of the Galaxy on Fire-series by Fishlabs.
There are already some other Wing Commander-style Space Shooters available for iOS and Android, but most fail to succeed. Beyond Space is a pleasant exceptions. What is so special about Beyond Space, I will tell you in this review. Beyond Space is available for iOS and Android for € 2.69.
The game welcomes you with a very atmospheric intro. After the intro you are in the middle of the game already, because Beyond Space is a sequence of missions one after another. Between the missions you can visit the hangar where you can install new weapons and upgrades to your ship or where you can choose a totally different ship. Always assuming you have already unlocked the equipment. Each mission is introduced with small in-game-cutscenes. And now we have already reached one of the highlights of the game. Graphics and sound of Beyond Space are top-notch and spread a tremendous atmosphere.
You notice that especially during the cutscenes where you have enough time to keep an eye on the environment. But even during the missions the game is full of atmosphere. You can expect spectacular Star Wars-like space battles with small and large spaceships, flying asteroids, dust clouds and spectacular light and sun effects. Furtheremore there are lots radio messages with voice output. Thankfully the developer didn't make any experiments regarding the controls of the game. You control your space ship either by tilting your device or with a virtual analog stick. Via buttons you can fire or use your afterburner. Everything works as it should so that you can expect real Wing Commander-feeling.
My conclusion:
Beyond Space is one of the most positive highlights of the last few weeks. I have played lots of space shooters on my iPhone, but only the Galaxy on Fire series convinced me so far. With Beyond Space the Fishlabs-series finally got some competition. But the comparison isn't totaly fair. Galaxy on Fire 2 is an epic space-opera with countless missions,a trading system, an outstanding technical presentation and a large coherent story. In a direct comparison Beyond Space can't match Galaxy on Fire 2 because the game only features 16 missions and not such a big universe. But these 16 missions are fun pure, thx to the great presentation and the excellent atmosphere. So anyone who loves Wing Commander-games should definetly download Beyond Space. Thanks to three levels of difficulty, you can adjust Beyond Space according to your flying skills. Oh, and: Beyond Space can be played without any InApp Purchases. But those of you who want to unlock all space ships earlier can do this with an InApp-purchase. Beyond Space is around 660 MB in size and receives a clear download recommendation from me. -
