The lore of the game tells us that Markarth is an old Dwemer city that has been taken over by the Nords. If you're not familiar, the Dwarves were an old elven culture who exceled in mechanical engineering as well as magic. All of this is very interesting, and the buildings in Markarth are indeed in the Dwarven style, but what you should expect in any situation where a city has a long history of multiple cultures is a mix of architectural styles, and the renovation of old buildings for new purposes. That cultural mixing and architectural reuse is conspicuously missing in Markarth, a missed opportunity to tell the history of Markarth in much greater nuance.
