Are new iOS features making Unity redundant?
Since Apple started providing features in its Xcode based developer offering that support 2D game development, way back in iOS 7 in 2013, it has been steadily improving its game. In the latest update the fruity phone vendor has added features that look a lot like some of the killer features that developers who currently use Unity and other engines will be familiar with. Meanwhile in the back end, Sprite Kit has been tracking the growth of the iPhone platform, seamlessly supporting speed & efficiency improvements like Apple's new Metal GPU-level rendering framework and the App slicing tooling that gives its native games tiny download sizes no the App Store. What does all this mean for folks trying to choose what tech stack to use? Is Unity about to become redundant?
