Integrating Unity app with Google's Firebase System
Unity has a reputation for being an easy-to-learn platform, providing a great foundation for a variety of applications including mobile apps. But when developing a Unity app for mobile platforms, one of the first major pieces of functionality a comprehensive app will require that extends outside the Unity API is data storage and retrieval.
This talk will introduce you to the fundamentals of building a mobile app with an external database and exploring how to get the most out of the added connectivity. It will also go over best practices to take to make your app feel polished and responsive.
The talk will demonstrate how to set up and integrate an app with Google's Firebase system - one of the easiest, most comprehensive and scalable platforms available and a handful of simple ways we can use this functionality to build a professional looking app using Unity.
The approaches demonstrated in this talk will be based on those used in products developed by Lightweave.
Tom Smeltzer has been building mobile apps in Unity since 2012. As a senior developer at Lightweave, Tom has developed key mobile applications such as Brisbane Festival 2017, Ekka 2018 and District. His specialities are augmented reality, data systems, and user input mechanisms.
This talk was filmed on the 30th of July 2018, for the Brisbane Unity Developers meetup. If you are interested in following upcoming events, you can sign up for any of these channels:
