In this session, Ben Droste will speak about how fundamental art principles were used when designing and constructing the environments in his new indie adventure-puzzle game, The Eyes of Ara. Using examples from the game, Ben will cover how considerations of composition, lighting, colour, and post effects can be used to guide a player through an environment, inform the gameplay, and tell the story, all the while looking pretty in the process.

Ben will also speak briefly about the process of building The Eyes of Ara as a one-person studio. The tools and processes used, and some of the challenges involved coming from an art background with no programming experience.

Ben Droste is the Director and Lead Developer at 100 Stones Interactive, his one-man indie studio that just launched its first title, The Eyes of Ara, an Adventure-Puzzle game for PC and Mac. Prior to this Ben worked as a Senior Environment Artist and Level Designer at various Brisbane based studios over the past twelve years, including Krome Studios, KMM Games, SEGA Studios Australia, and 5 Lives Studios. He has worked on games in a wide variety of genres across console, PC, and mobile. As such, Ben’s work on the Eyes of Ara was heavily influenced by his experience in environmental art and design, and his skills from working with a range of different platforms and toolsets over the years.

This talk was filmed on the 26th of September 2016, for the Brisbane Unity Developers meetup. If you are interested in following upcoming events, you can sign up to any of these channels:
