Asguards Wrath - VR Gameplay Oculus Rift S
Well, overall, that was more fun than I expected. It was also a bit slower than I anticipated but that'snot realy an issue for me.
What IS an issue for me is the asanine parry mechanic. I don't know who thought forcing the player to go on the defensive for every battle was going to be a fun experience but they probably shouldn't be in game design...
The problem for me is not difficulty. Most of you know that the bigger the challenge the more stubborn I get at trying to overcome it and that I take a lot of satisfaction from overcoming those challenges. I don't want to be dismissed as just being salty cause I need to git gud.
The problem for me is the illogicallity of the whole process. I can side step. I can dodge. I can slice the enemies rips open. I can take a mace to his head. I can dance all around him all day long hitting him when he overextends... You know, how actual combat is done... But it doesn't matter until I parry. Why a parry? What's special about a parry? What magic god magic makes my parry more effective than a shield bash? Or stabbing him in the throat? I just don't get it. I find it illogical and for lack of a better word a stupid mechanic. Both of those trigger me. Stupidity and illogical things trigger the shit out of me.
The whole combat system is really just unacceptable. Especially after experiencing the insanely fun Until You Fall combat.
I did speak with Bartuby and the parry system is prevalent across all characters and only gets worse as the game progresses throwing multiple runic armored opponants at you at once. Hearing this makes me not really want to keep playing. Fortunately or not, you can set the difficulty to easy and the runic armor acts like a second health bar. This is much more logical to me as me swinging my god powered hero weapon down on this runic armor would likely do damage to it and eventually break it. I've heard that enemies are both slower and dumber on easy, as expected of easy. This is unfortunate. I would much rather just have a toggle for the runic armor mechanic that I could turn off and still have Wrath difficulty enemies. Oh well.... Maybe I'll play through the rest on easy.
As for the rest of the game... For what it's worth.
The tutorial is pretty lengthy. Maybe a bit too lengthy but it's more engaging than simply running through all the motions before anything gets started. They did a good job of blending it into what felt like actual gameplay.
For an Oculus game it was very pretty. The Rift Ss static IPD prevents me from fully appreciating it but it was a very nice looking game even on Medium/High settings instead of epic. I miss my main PC.
The audios default settings require a bit of balance adjustment in the settings as soon as you can as the voices were sometimes difficult to hear clearly. Especially in that first encounter. Balance aside, the audio and voice acting was wonderfully done.
I liked the variety of items I was able to find along with the crafting system though I do wish there were more options for inventory management. The way the game is designed now you can not stockpile any items you want to keep on you at all times. IE Potions. You can not break stacks or move just one from your chest to your puch. This is a huge oversight in my opinon.
Good game with a few glaring flaws that drastically lower my opinion of it. Combat is the core of the game and they really messed it up. Couple that with the number of items I was picking up and the poor inventory management and that's 2 frustrating core features. It makes me feel like the devs went for a quantity over quality approach for all but the graphics and audio.
Increadibly unfortunate but as I said in the intro, the 40+ hour campaign on it's own is nearly enough to give it a thumbs up on its own. Likely a worthy pickup for the story and the experience at $$ however don't expect enjoyable combat.
