Boiling Steel - VR Gameplay Valve Index
10A bit rough around the edges but still enjoyable.
On average the games visuals are pretty decent. Some environments look pretty good while others just look a bit drab and unlived in. It's not really something I can put my finger on, but some of the industrial areas meh. Perhaps it was the random sky floating for seemingly no reason. The skybox looks pretty good btw. Unfortunately this has the effect of feeling like you're not in a world but a tiny little instance.
The game audio was pretty good as well. The voice acting was pretty good especially the tutorial cowboy. The AI manipulating us has a very robotic and stilted way of speaking which I think works well for what she is. Some of the translations could use work though. Nothing else really stood out as good or bad.
Index control mapping in the tutorial. EA thing. Some control choices in general. May want to run a custom mapping.
One very intuitive bit of control though was the weapon selection system. I loved how simple and easy to use this was. It just felt good too. The comparison to Tediore weapons also amused me quite a bit.
Sadly the weapon upgrade system was just a straight path with an exp bar. Still, weapons that grow with you are nice. Speaking of upgrades, I kind of wish there were more options when applying upgrade points to your shell. It's pretty much a set of bland straight path.
The big draw here for me though is the story. A lot happens in your first hour of gameplay and it's pretty thoroughly hooked me into finishing the story. I'm very interested in seeing how our robotic savior is going to betray us in the future. I'm guessing we'll never get our body back as she can't actually repair it.
A major tell of fun factor, I completely lost track of time while playing until my headset ran out of power and I noticed I'd been recording for twice what I normally aim for!
