Ashen Game Sample: N-Gage
Original Air Date: January 12th, 2010
This is going to be our last N-Gage video for now, which puts us at 8... some might think we're done, but we have a few more games we've yet to play, lol. Can you believe this game right here? What is it? It's a GOOD N-Gage game. It's touted as one of the best games for N-Gage (which is true I guess) and the best shooter, though I can think of one or two that easily give Ashen a run for its money (Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm comes to mind. My first impression of it was being blown awaaaaay). If you gotta have ten N-Gage games, Ashen and Ghost Recon should be somewhere on your list. At any rate, I digress. Let me tell you a little about Ashen.
In this game, you assume the role of the middle-aged Jacob Ward, a tall, solidly built, retired military man who spends his days traveling and studying military history. He is simply enjoying himself one day when he gets a letter from his older sister, Vanessa Ward, a historian and fanatic of the paranormal. Jacob's discomfort with Vanessa's obsession with the occult has led to a rift between the two, but when he reads his sister's letter and discovers that she may be in trouble at Seven River City, he (though reluctantly) takes it upon himself to look for her. His only clue is her place of residence and "Maqabir", a mythical lost city.
You'll quickly discover that a number of strange things are going on in Seven River City. The town is a wreck and seems deserted, there are trails of blood around the city, and strange creatures roam the streets. As you make your way to Vanessa's house, you'll find a pair of "Ghost Vision" googles and discover that there are creatures that exist between worlds. It's your job to find what you can and blast anything that you deem unfriendly.
The game looks very good for an N-Gage game with nice lighting, a smooth framerate, nicely textured, decently sized maps (grainy in some spots, but very good for N-Gage), and good animations. The audio is also surprisingly ambient and relatively rich for an N-Gage game, and the sound effects are pretty typical. The game has eight chapters, nine weapon types, and nine enemies with different characteristics. The "Ghost Vision" is a cool touch as you can see enemies that are almost invisible in low-light situations. The game controls very well (you can even go underwater!) and even supports four-player multiplayer, though I've never played it.
I tried to record the game and adjust the view whenever the brightness got too low (the camera would keep adjusting during different light situations). Grab a pulse cannon and zap enemies, equip dual pistols and light-up a corridor, do what you have to do to stay alive. This game is a keeper by N-Gage standards. Enjoy.
