As expected, Assassin's Creed Unity is almost completely unplayable on my GTX 580...but not quite. Given that I thought one of AC3's several underrated accomplishments were the incremental improvements in environments and sense of place over previous installments in the series, it's not surprising that I find the experience of exploring ACU's lavishly produced next-gen version of Paris to be very engrossing. For perhaps the first time in video game history, the ostensibly well-trodden streets of a virtual city feel truly populated and lifelike due to a combination of careful attention to environmental detail, strong texture work and of course those impressively large numbers of pseudo-unique NPCs on screen at the same time. In all other respects, ACU has already been deemed a boring and unimaginative gameplay experience by many of the same critics who lauded Black Flag as an unexpected return to form, but at least there's nothing tired and by-the-numbers about the open world Ubisoft Montreal has crafted this time around.
