I wasn't going to buy a new computer just yet, but Assassin's Creed Unity made me do it. My earlier plan had been to eventually get a massive rig with two or three GPUs and more RAM than you'd ever need, but since it seems that a true generational shift for graphics cards and processors hasn't happened yet I decided it made more sense to buy a much more modest PC if I was going to upgrade right now. So a solid Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz with a modest 16 GB RAM and a single GeForce GTX 980 will have to suffice for now (not the least since this leaves me with plenty of readily available cash for further upgrades down the line). I'm obviously going to keep using 1920*1080 with this configuration; any 4K nonsense will have to wait.
As for Unity itself, this extremely demanding (or maybe just unfinished) game runs at the expected 35-55 FPS on my new rig on the highest settings. Despite more anti-aliasing and other fancy effects it doesn't look radically different than it did on my old GTX 580...but given just how good it looked even then a playable frame rate was all I really needed.
