Assault Course 2 brings you to the down and dirty muck of boot camp without all the fuss of having drill sergeants shouting in your face all the time. Is it fun? Reasonably. Does it look good? Yup. Is it worth the time to play it? Let's find out.

First off, the graphics are pretty good. The game is done in 3D, and while it will definitely not stand up to the graphics of modern games, it still works well enough for a free-to-play online game. The landscapes of the levels are all designed fairly well, with a lot of detail going into the environment. Even things that have no actual bearing on the gameplay are nicely done, giving it that much more aesthetic appeal. The character model does leave a bit to be desired though, as his actions and animations at times make him look a bit more like a wooden puppet than a soldier going through boot camp.

The music is pretty much standard military stuff, something you'd expect to be playing through a montage in a movie showing how tough a recruit's training is. There are some sound effects here and there, but for the most part they're just average stuff with nothing really astounding or special to wow the player.

The gameplay is fairly simple. You move around using the arrow keys and you jump using the "x" key. At times when you encounter different obstacles, you'll have to use the keys in different ways. When crawling under some barbed wire for example, you're going to need to mash the left and right keys alternately to crawl through. Jumping onto and climbing up a wall requires you to do the same, but with the "x" key being mashed in stead. All the different obstacles of the game are pretty much based on those controls, making for an easy-to-learn experience.

The game starts out simply enough, with your recruit having to navigate through the obstacle course and get to the other end. What psychopathic drill sergeant designed the course will forever remain a mystery though. Why psychopathic? Well, for the most part, the obstacle course is standard boot-camp stuff. But then you get the detonations that explode barrels of what seems to be C4 going off not two feet from the recruit. And those aren't random either, the recruit has to blow them up to get through. Well, sure, it's loads of fun seeing it happen, but one would probably think twice before joining a real-world military that has similar obstacle courses.

You don't have to worry about dying though, as there aren't any baddies shooting at you. The kryptonite of the recruit though is mud. Sure, he can climb up walls, jump from platform to platform, take 4 meter drops and come away unscathed; but if he stands too long in the mud or even falls from barely a third of a meter into the mud, he gets tired. Reasonable? Not really. But it works gameplay-wise. If your recruit gets too tired, then that's it for the level. The only other limitation is that the level has to be finished within a certain time-limit. The limit is very generous though, and you don't really need to worry all that much about it.

All in all, Assault Course 2 is a fairly average game. It is fun though, and you should try it out, but don't expect anything too ground-breaking about it.
