Asteroid 2024 YR4 could hit Earth in 2032
78Asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered in late 2024, initially raised concerns about a possible impact with Earth in 2032. However, the chances of a collision with our planet have been reduced to less than 0.002%. There is now a 3.8% chance that it could hit the Moon on December 22, 2032.
If the impact occurs, it will not affect the Moon's orbit or pose any risk to Earth. The impact would create a new crater on the satellite, offering scientists a unique opportunity to study asteroids and their impacts, which could be useful for improving planetary defense technologies.
The asteroid is estimated to be between 53 and 67 meters in size, approximately the height of a 15-story building. This event, if it happens, would be visible from Earth with telescopes and even binoculars, depending on the conditions.
