Atari 2600 Console Variations and Review
The Atari 2600 was a crazy console, with more revisions and redesigns than almost any other console that I can think of! In this video I decided that it would be fun to take a look at a whole bunch of different versions, while pointing out each of their pros and cons and just talking about the console's features and highlights overall.
I start off by talking about the Heavy Sixer, which was the original version of the Atari 2600 that was actually made in the United States, and then proceed to talk about the later versions and even some unofficial Atari 2600 consoles that weren't actually made by Atari! Here is a quick breakdown about what I talk about in the video:
Original Heavy Sixer - The first model of the Atari 2600. Collectors gave it this name as it is distinctly heavier than all other models of the Atari 2600.
Light Sixer - The first revision. it looks almost identical to the original model with the exception of the fact that the front was changed a very small amount. It also weighs much less than the Heavy Sixer.
Black "Darth Vader" - This version of the console removed the woodgrain from the front and replaced it with a black piece of plastic with the console's name. The fact that the console is completely black is what resulted in it getting this unofficial name.
Atari 2600 Junior - This version of the console is super compact and is almost half of the size of all of the previous consoles. There were a couple different variations of the mini, one which has a larger rainbow stripe than the other.
Telegames - This version of the console was sold by Sears. It has a few visual differences although otherwise it is identical to the Heavy Sixer.
Coleco Gemini - A console that plays Atari 2600 games that was made by Coleco, the same company that made the Colecovision! Can you imagine what would happen if Sony created a console that could play Wii U or Xbox One games? things sure were different back then.
Well I hope that you enjoy this look and quick historical ramble about the Atari 2600 and all of its crazy versions! Please feel free to leave a comment if you have feedback or anything else to add!
