1Introduction to the initial version of the Atari ST operating system.
The Atari ST was designed to be a cheap Macintosh clone: simple mouse driven user interface, where the user does not have to worry about the underlying operating system. These machines were designed to be productivity tools, not for the programmer, but for the artist or the office clerk.
Compared to the Macintosh, the full operating system is in ROM. So users did not have to use a separate system disk in conjunction with the operating system. On the other hand the little ROM space that was available provided only the bare bone operating system: not a single app was included with the system out of the box.
