A playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1991 action-puzzle game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Atomic Punk. The game was released as Bomber Boy in Japan and Dynablaster in Europe.

Played through "Game A," the game's original story mode. Game B, which I do not play in this video, is a Game Boy recreation of the original Bomberman game.

Atomic Punk, despite the weird name, is a Bomberman game through-and-through. It still features the classic guy in the white helmet dropping bombs to destroy walls and enemies while searching for power-ups.

The structure of this one differs a fair amount from the other titles though: as you progress through each of the different worlds, you unlock access to each of the different power-up types, and these become available as items that you equip after buying at the store in between worlds. In essence, it gives the game a Mega Man type feel, since certain power-ups are far more helpful in some worlds over others.

The worlds themselves differ not just in graphics, but each introduces a new element into the gameplay - some areas have blocks that take two bomb blasts to wipe out, while other areas are made entirely out of fire, and touching the flaming blocks will kill you instantly. It's a novel take on the original formula, and it works well most of the time, even if a couple of the stages get a bit annoying because of the additions.

For the first portable Bomberman title, Atomic Punk is pretty good. The simplistic graphics and play suit the handheld format well, and the screen can keep up with the graphics much better than most action games. If you want a fun twist on the Bomberman formula and want to play it on the go, this might just be what your looking for. It lacks the refinement of the later Wario Blast! Featuring Bomberman, but it also contains a lot of elements that were stripped out for that game. It's not perfect, but it certainly does enough right to make it a lot of fun.
