A playthrough of THQ's 1993 movie licensed-based platformer for the Super NES, The Lawnmower Man.

I played through the game as the woman, mainly because I really dislike Pierce Brosnan. Apparently her name is Carla, but I thought of her foremost as the Not-Pierce Brosnan character.

Anyways, based on the 1992 movie of the same name, this version of The Lawnmower Man was released on the SNES, Genesis, and Game Boy. There was another game, an interactive movie, released for PC and Sega CD (check the card links to see that version).

LM is made up of two primary game types: First, there are run-and-gun platforming sections, which have you collecting power-ups, killing baddies, and solving the occasional puzzle. The atrention to detail in these stages, in spite of using such small sprites, looks excellent, and there are constantly changing computer displays running at the bottom, giving you hints and fun animations to look at.

The second variety of stages, serving to link together the platform sections, are the Virtual Reality areas. The VR stages, played from a first-person perspective in fast-moving 3D corridor-style movement, have you navigating "cyberspace" to move between real-world locations and fighting the occasional bad guys. While these stages have probably aged worse than the 2D platforming parts, they are quite impressive for the SNES, with smoothly scaling sprites and objects flying at you at some impressive speed without any frame hitching, stuttering, or object clipping. The soundtrack bears special mention for being absolutely awesome. The tunes are super catchy, the samples are all pretty good quality, and much of it reminds me of Depeche Mode. I certainly consider that a plus - I suppose not everyone would, though.

So, The Lawnmower Man is a title that got virtually ignored on release, and hasn't really gained much attention in the many years since. Don't let that influence you negatively, though. It's well worth a playthrough. Even though I prefer the FMV game, there's little to find wrong with this 16-bit gem.
