This is a video demonstrating Creative's CMSS-3D HRTF with the Aureal A3D Player demo using A3D-Alchemy to convert the Aureal calls to DirectSound3D calls, which are then converted to OpenAL calls by ALchemy.
This might be the saddest comparison video ever made. Creative's CMSS-3D just doesn't compare to Aureal's A3D 2.0 at all despite being the newer technology. The positional audio calls are exactly the same, but the quality of the HRTF filter is just unacceptable. It's almost impossible to discern elevation, for instance. It just goes to show you how unfair life can be sometimes. Creative bought out Aureal just to stop them from overtaking their market share, and the end result was a complete degradation of gaming audio until OpenAL Soft introduced HRTF in the mid-2010s.
