AVOID AT ALL COSTS! DO NOT BUY THESE GARBAGE "NES Mini" CLONE SYSTEMS!
I hate seeing people get taken advantage of, especially when those taking advantage KNOW they're taking advantage of people. Throughout the year, but especially around the holidays, I see kiosks in the malls selling "NES Classics", and these things have been around for years. They're cheap knockoffs of the NES Classic Edition that, while they look decent, are total garbage clone systems. Let's take a look at why I believe you need to avoid these at all costs and should not buy these garbage clone systems.
I have to give the manufacturers credit, the controller and system look ok, which is what they are hoping for. They are hoping the uninformed fan will look at these and think "Hey, the NES Classic! I didn't get one before, I want one now!". That's what these resellers are hoping for, but really, they're looking to cash in on nostalgia.
There are a lot of issues with these systems. Let's start at first by talking about the "620 Classic Games" claim. There may be 620 titles in here, but they are not all different games. Many times you'll find different translations of the same game, Chinese, Russian, English, and more. So in that example there we have 3 languages, that counts as 3 games to the manufacturer. Very sneaky!
Another major issue with these things is the video output. What made the NES Classic so popular for many was the HDMI output that looked great on a modern TV. Well these things aren't HDMI, they're not even Component video. Nope, these things use Composite video, the same video signal as the original system. That will lead to grainy, and possibly laggy, images and gameplay. It's just not a great experience, even for those who want to play on a CRT Television. The controllers also use an Atari/Sega Genesis controller port, meaning it is not compatible with any of the actual NES Classic accessories.
These things are simply a cash grab, nothing more, and it angers me when I see people waste money on them. The next time you see them at the mall, make sure you do NOT buy these and avoid them at all costs!!
