DUDE I Fixed A Broken Cartridge With 3D Printing & Made It REGION-FREE
Anytime you go hunting for video games and buy game lots there's a chance that you could get a damaged game. Sometimes that means the broken PCBs, sometimes it means dirty connectors, and yet other times it could be a bad backup battery. One annoying issue is when the inside supports for the PCB break off, which could lead to a few different things. For some, if you're lucky and have the broken piece inside the cartridge, you can try to superglue the piece back into place. The issue is that it's darn hard to get the pieces realigned properly and sometimes the glue doesn't set before you let go of the piece and it shifts. Other times the piece is missing or there are other issues inside the shell. Looking at this copy of Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss for the Super Famicom I not only had a fix in mind, I had an improvement in mind. I was going to 3D print a new back, so let's take a look at how I Fixed A Broken Cartridge With 3D Printing & Made It REGION-FREE, this way I not just fixed a broken import cartridge but I was also going to improve on it.
While I could have designed my own back plate, I headed over to Thingiverse and found a new cartridge with the region-free back I was looking for. You can find that file at this link:

I printed the file at a .20 Layer Height in SainSmart PLA+ grey filament on my Creality K1. It took about an hour to print. When it was done, I cleaned off the supports that printed, which only took a few minutes. The one thing I wasn't expecting was that there weren't any holes for the screws, but I used a drill bit to start the mounting holes. Once I did, I aligned the 2 halves of the case, threaded the screws in by hand, and we were ready to test the fit. But not in a Super Famicom, in a US Super Nintendo!
It took no time to get things aligned and popped in. I was very happy with the way the cartridge lined up into my system, just as if it were a US and not Japanese cartridge! This is something I'll definitely keep in my back pocket if I need to perform this repair again in the future.
