Passing On the Love Of Video Games To The Next Generation
Let's face some cold, hard facts. We won't be here forever, we just won't. But what's as important as how you've lived is what you leave behind and pass along to the next generation. For my Grandparents and Parents, it was a love of fishing, traveling to Shawano Lake, and going to the Flea Market or the downtown bakery on Saturdays. There was also a love of hunting that was passed to my oldest brother that me, well, let's just say freezing my rear off in a tree at Oh-Dark-Thirty isn't my idea of fun. But as my parents and grandparents passed those things down to me and my brothers, I've tried to pass things I love and am passionate about to my kids. One such thing has been my love of video games, starting with my oldest with the Wii and Wii Sports, and now with my youngest. Let's take a look at how I am passing along the love of video games to the next generation.
My youngest has enjoyed watching me play games on the Nintendo Switch and Switch Oled over the years, and now she gets to play along with me, her sister, and her sister's boyfriend. My wife isn't a gamer at all, so this is something completely from me. It started about 18 months ago when I would hand my daughter a non-functional controller so she could "play", but eventually she caught on. Well crud, what was I to do? Then I remembered that there were player assists in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and we were literally off to the races.
One of the things all kids this age struggle with is the coordination of what each hand does separate from the other. There are still times she forgets she not only needs to steer but also hold down the throttle. Thankfully, Mario Kart has both steering assist and throttle assist, so that keeps her moving ok on her own. Against me, she doesn't fare very well, expectedly, but she's finished 2nd to me a lot and, just playing against the computer, has won a number of races! And she's not even 5!!
Beyond Mario Kart, we've also played a lot of Super Mario 3D World, and one of the things with that is I often carry her while she has a fire flower power-up. This way she can smash the fire button while I get us through the level. Mario WOnder has been a bit of a struggle thus far, but we're having fun.
How to you pass along your video game fandom to your kids? How old were they when you started playing games with them? And what games did you start with? Share your story in the comments!
