Avoid Pitfalls by Exploiting the Transceiver in Metal Gear (NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears!

In Metal Gear for the NES, occasionally giant pitfalls will open up in the floor immediately in front of you, and they can be pretty hard to react to. Not to mention they will instantly Game Over you. But there's a fairly simply trick you can exploit by opening and closing your Transceiver just as the hole begins to open.

If you open your transceiver while the pitfall is opening, that pitfall will not expand to its full size. Be careful, however, because when you close your transceiver, it will appear as if the pitfall closed back up completely, and the floor/ground has returned to normal. This is NOT the case!

While the pitfall looks as though it has disappeared, the hole in the floor is still active and can still harm you. The hole will simply be as large as it was when you OPENED the transceiver, yet it will not grow to the size of a fully-formed adult pitfall.

So as long as you tiptoe around where the hole WAS when you opened your transceiver, Solid Snake will not fall into the pit.

Also, opening and closing the Transceiver will cause resource items like ammunition boxes and rations to reappear, allowing you to recollect them fast!
