In this video we take a look at the Hornady 123gr SST in 7.62x39mm. The SST is a polymer tipped round that features a bonded core and jacket. The round was made with hunting in mind. The bonded core and jacket allows the round to complete controlled expansion inside of a soft target. This helps the round deal consistent damage deep within the target.
The projectile's ballistic tip gives it two advantages over open tip ammunition. First, the polymer tip gives helps the round pierce the air in a more efficient manner. The more aerodynamic polymer tip brings the bullet's ballistic coefficient to 0.295. Although this is not as high as most match ammunition, it is high enough to maintain accuracy at ranges out to 500 meters. The ballistic tip also helps the round expand immediately upon impact with the target. The tip pushes into the soft lead core flowering it into a large diameter projectile. This drags through the target and increases damage.
The Hornady SST in 7.62x39mm features a steel case and a berdan primer. These cheap components keep the price very low for performance hunting ammunition. The SST comes in boxes of 50, and can be easily found online for roughly $34 a box.
Today we tested this ammunition by three means, First we fired the rounds through a Yugoslavian SKS out to 338 meters. This was to show that even with iron sights this ammo is dead-on accurate. Next we fired the rounds through a chronograph to see the average velocity. Finally we fired the rounds into a clear ballistic gelatin substitute. This was to show the possible damage that a soft target might incur when hit with this ammo.
