In this video we examine a commonly overlooked aspect of defensive ammunition: barrel length. Most gun owners will find that their defensive ammo performs well with a standard full length barrel. They load up their guns and think nothing of it. This is a critical mistake.

Most modern hollow point and jacketed hollow point ammunition relies on velocity in order to perform as desired. The truth of the matter is most handguns are extremely under-powered. They are used over rifles simply because of convenience of size. This lack of velocity makes barrel length a crucial element when considering defensive ammo.

A short barrel will result in a loss of velocity which will be transferred to the bullet's performance. Most handgun ammunition that has been designed to fragment or expand needs that crucial energy in order to perform well. The ammo we used today was the Liberty Civil Defense 357 Magnum and 38 Special loadings. We chose these rounds because we have previously tested this ammo and know that it can perform as designed with a full length barrel.

Our testing showed that the shorter barrel took away the key advantage of the Liberty Civil Defense ammo: velocity. Both rounds were unable to fully perform due to a sizable loss in energy. The 357 Magnum fragmented slightly, and the 38 Special failed to break apart. Both rounds were out performed by the same loading in 9mm.

Keep this information in mind when trying to find the best defensive ammunition for your gun. Does your firearm have a long enough barrel to take advantage of your ammunition's capabilities? Will you be able to burn all of the round's powder in the length of your barrel? Can you risk your JHP or HP not expanding on target? These are questions you need to consider.
