I'm sorry... I did everything I possibly could to enjoy this game, but I failed miserably. The strange thing is, I used to enjoy this game a lot back when I was a kid. However, this was one of the first fighting games I played for Playstation, as I didn't get mine until around the time Final Fantasy 7 came out (I had the ol' Saturn since launch).

From my understanding, this is a fairly uncommon game for Playstation (and the last game in the U.S. before the series got the axe), but I picked up a copy about a year ago and never really played it. While going through some requests, I felt a bit nostalgic and popped this in as a pitstop between the task at hand. I'm kinda disappointed that I did. This game seems tacky and shoddily put together on a number of levels.

You have the opening movie, which I won't say much outside of Eiji's lips reminding me of Link: Faces of Evil and some of the characters looking a tad strange. Visually, the game seems like a bit of a step down from the other games. The backdrops look incredibly sparse for the most part (more than usual), characters don't look as polished in a sense (though Sofia's new look is "interesting") and the arenas are closed off. Many of the arenas block the backdrops from view. While the closed arenas add a few new elements to the fights, the ring-outs were one of the things I liked about BAT.

Characters don't have the same linkable attack system as before, but a preset ability tree of sorts, so you can't cancel many attacks into other moves. This was remedied to an extent in the Japan and PAL only fourth game, Toshinden 4 (Subaru). This game still has moves that don't connect properly and a fair deal of character imbalance, but things do seem a little better than BAT:URA, fighting-wise. I like the ability to switch from 30FPS to 60FPS, but there is some tradeoff in the visual department if you switch to 60FPS. You can also use "bombs", which vary from character to character. They're kinda neat. Oh well. At least MJ is in this game in the form of Ten Count. Enjoy.
