Lightning Legend: Daigo no Daibouken, or "LL: Adventure of Great Wisdom" (ライトニングレジェンド～大悟の大冒険) is a Japan-only fighting game from Konami. It would've been a great fighting game if the response wasn't so jerky and the hit detection wasn't iffy, as the game is average-to-above-average otherwise and has a funny enough story and more than a slew of unlockables (character outfits, hidden characters, hundreds of items and tidbits to gather, lots of personality) to keep gamers busy, which was a rarity for a fighting game of the time (late '96, early '97) to have such longevity (counting unlockables alone). As-is, it's an interesting game that's hard not to like as the overall effort put into the game is quite apparent.

Most character's stories merge together as they often do in video games, but the main story revolves around Daigo Raioh, a young boy who is one of the only people who can re-seal an ancient demon who has broken free after hundreds of years of slumber, Dragless. He is a descendent of the Raioh lineage who sealed him away centuries ago. Your characters each have their different stories and quirks, but they eventually learn of Dragless and know that he must be stopped before he attains his full power or the world will be doomed.

The fights are what some would call 2.5D; characters are 3D but the movement is mostly limited to a 2D plane, with limited abilities to take advantage of the third dimension present in the game. As such, it's pretty standard of many early polygonal fighters of the time. Characters can execute various special attacks and super attacks as well, though the effectiveness of said moves varies wildy from useful to "Seen a mile away". The graphics are very sharp and the models are nicely represented, and some of the character animations are surprisingly fluid. The music is hit and miss, though it's mostly a hit. Enjoy.
