By doing some simple HEX editing during the level select screen, you can force the game to select a stage beyond the canonical 35 levels (The "canon" Stage 36 loops back to Stage 1's map with harder cast of enemy Tanks and faster spawn rate)

This video shows the "Real"/Glitch Stage 36 to Stage 70, completing Stage 70 the game loops once again back to Stage 1, with Stage 1's enemy Tank lineup and slow spawn rate. Stage 71 to 256 exist, though.

What's interesting in the beyond levels are existance of "Player Clone" Tanks that give massive, non-fixed points (that glitches out the hundreds point counter), and even slower spawn rate on many levels.

My bro (Player 2) postulated that the existance of these glitch tanks is the inspiration source for Tank 1990.
