Berzerk - 3 minute arcade experience. All game play is my own and recorded on my first attempt at playing the game. 3 Minutes of the video is then taken and made in to an upload for YouTube for your enjoyment.

“Berzerk” is a classic arcade game released in 1980 by Stern Electronics. Designed by Alan McNeil, it’s a multidirectional shooter set in a series of top-down, maze-like rooms filled with armed robots.

The player controls a green stick figure using a joystick to navigate the mazes, and a firing button to shoot lasers at the robots. The robots, in turn, fire back, and the player must avoid their shots as well as the electrified walls of the maze. Contact with either results in the loss of a life.

One of the most distinctive features of “Berzerk” is Evil Otto, the player’s indestructible nemesis represented by a bouncing smiley face. Evil Otto quickens the pace of the game, relentlessly pursuing the player through the mazes. He can move through walls and speeds up once all the robots are destroyed, although he moves at the same speed as the player horizontally but faster vertically.

The goal is to destroy the robots for points and escape each room through an opening in the far wall. If the player clears all robots before exiting, they receive a bonus score. The game is known for its voice synthesis, one of the first games to feature talking robots, adding to its immersive experience.

“Berzerk” has a vast number of rooms, 65,536 to be exact, but due to random number generation limitations, there are fewer than 1,024 unique maze layouts. The game’s difficulty increases as the player’s score rises, with robots changing color and being able to have more bullets on the screen at once.

The game was a significant success and led to the development of a sequel, “Frenzy,” released in 1982. “Berzerk” remains a beloved title in the retro gaming community for its simple yet challenging gameplay and its place in video game history as one of the first to use speech synthesis.
