Rodland - My 3 Min Arcade Experience
Rodland - 3 minute arcade experience. All game play is my own and recorded on my first attempt at playing the game. 3 Minutes of the video is then taken and made in to an upload for YouTube for your enjoyment.
“Rodland,” also known as “Yōsei Monogatari Rod Land” in Japan, is a charming platform arcade game released by Jaleco in 1990. The game features two fairy sisters, Tam and Rit, on a quest to rescue their mother who has been captured and taken to a castle.
The gameplay of “Rodland” is unique in the platform genre. Instead of jumping, the fairies use magic rods to immobilize enemies by creating a force-field around them. Once caught, the player can then flip the enemies from side to side until they are defeated, leaving behind power-ups.
The game consists of 40 screens filled with various enemies. Each level is a single screen composed of platforms, ladders, and later, tunnels. The fairies can’t jump but can summon custom ladders to reach different platforms, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.
“Rodland” is often compared to games like “Bubble Bobble” due to its single-screen, enemy-clearing mechanics. However, it stands out with its non-jumping heroes and the ability to conjure ladders, which requires players to think creatively about navigating the levels.
The game was well-received and became particularly popular in Europe, leading to several home platform ports. It’s remembered for its cute graphics, engaging gameplay, and as a classic example of the single-screen platformer genre.
