Big Changes Coming to Final Fantasy 7 Remake Summoning Mechanics

This is a big change that inevitably will impact the entire game. Lets review. We can only equip one summon per character. Summons can only be used in specific circumstances and even then criteria must be met to use the summon. We also may not be able to directly choose who we summon as he stated that "ifrit would begin to resonate" which would then que the ability to summon him. Summons fight freely and players can activate a special attack with the use of ATB.
This is a lot to take in and will change all of FF7 Remake drastically.

Final Fantasy 7 had a ridiculous amount of summons in the original and the combinations with other materia made you almost invincible if utilized right. These changes will nerf summons. Depending on how you look at it that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

In my opinion I did always feel summons were over powered and made the game a lot easier. I felt the charm of using a summon was taken away as you were able to summon basically anytime you wanted. While I do have mixed feelings I also understand the change. I do expect summons to be an option during boss fights but probably wont be utilized when dealing with weaker foes.

We expected many pieces of materia were not going to make a return in the remake. I can confidently say we likely will not get the W-Summon or Final Attack materia. IF we do get the final attack materia theres no way I can see them allowing it to work with any summoning materia.

So is this a big deal?

For me personally no. This is a Remake not a remaster. It was expected that things were going to change. This is probably the only change to gameplay that may upset some people but I believe that most will likely be okay with it. My only hope is that they will make it clear on how we can summon and when. FFXV did a terrible job with their summoning mechanics. So much so that I don't think I even saw all of the summons in the game. Time will tell just how it all works.
