In a magazine, Jack Clementi stumbles over an article that describes a unique piece of art that is owned by an American collector. But Clementi knows that this artwork should actually be in a small museum in the castle of the Prince of Roccaferro. So he informs his friend Henry Winterbottom of Lloyd's insurance that the prince's work is insured there. However, the artwork was not reported as stolen, and since the American artwork was examined by experts and found to be true, Clementi makes his way to Italy to get a picture of the artwork in the Count's museum. Gradually, he gets on the trail of the clan of art forgers, which also includes Vasco, the right hand of the count and his men. When the count finally invites Clementi to a hunt, the situation gets worse, because it appears that not only animals are to be killed on this hunt.
