I only ever came across the arcade version of Bionic Commando once, located in an arcade attached to a caravan site as part of a holiday park near Corton (nr. Great Yarmouth) in the UK in 1988. My general reaction to most arcade cabs was akin to a moth around a lightbulb, but Bionic Commando was special. Using a bionic arm to swing and grapple around the environment was an entirely new concept to me, and quality of the visuals and slick scrolling were just so exciting.
Sadly, it didn't take long to rattle through my stack of 10 pence pieces; the spike traps and hornet nests meant even getting off the first level was pretty much impossible, but it didn't matter - I was hooked. Fortunately, Software Creations created one of the C64 arcade ports of all time with their conversion of Bionic Commando, so that definitely scratched the itch!
Back to the arcade version, and I must confess the shine does start to wear off by the third level. As soon as you reach the sewers and have to deal with the giant mech robots and their annoying habit of dropping out of the sky on your head, things become exponentially more frustrating.
Even so, this is still a classic Capcom arcade game worthy of your attention.
