Bit Storm VR: First Loop - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
8Well that was frustrating... But was it frustrating in a good way? Bit Storm VR: First Loop has potential but it's delivery is off.
I went into the game thinking that it would be a story based FPS like any other as that's what the Steam description lead me to believe. However as most FPS games have you traversing a path, killing enemies that stay dead or at least spawn at a reasonable rate... BS VR spawns a continuous stream of enemies and throws them at you without rest.
It's done in such a way as to almost seem like the game might be bugged out but the character explicitly mentions it in the second map establishing it as the intended game mechanic.
I'm not sure how it should go about resolving the issue but I can see people getting rather confused in those first 5 minutes repeatedly dying quite easily to the robot hoard.
Which is a nice segue into...
The game definitely tickles that part of me that doesn't like to lose and will repeatedly throw myself at a challenge until I overcome it. It also tickles that part of me that likes the feeling of progression and getting stronger/better at a thing.
Both of those it does well. Unfortunately...
Graphically the game is nothing special. It's not going to win any awards for being the prettiest VR title but it's also not the worst I've seen.
The audio was also middle of the road. Not that great but I've seen worse. Sound effects need to be a little more balanced I think. I did eventually get used to it after turning the volume down quite a bit. This is something that seems like it could be a fairly immediate area for polish to improve the feel of the game.
This is another middle of the road title that I wish Steam had a neutral rating for. As there is no neutral rating I'll be giving the game a thumbs up as I do think the game will be enjoyable for the masochistic gamers out there that have fun with a game that's actually challenging in a fair way.
I feel like they're the intended audience. If you're less into challenge and more into instant gratification and feeling strong from the get go, you'll likely want to pass on this one.
