Blasting Through Random SciFi Space Dungeons in a Mech! – Gunhead Demo –
Gunhead is an Indie, FPS Action Roguelike Dungeon Crawler where you plan your route, then blast your way through random SciFi spaceship dungeons in a mech with jumpjets!
Gunhead feels a bit like a reversed FTL, where you’re the battle mech busting in on an FTL style bot ship, and taking over!
Think Cryptark, but as an FPS!
Awesome!
Procedural Space Dungeons!
The Sci-Fi space dungeons in Gunhead are made with Procedural Generation; providing Random Dungeons full of new guns and loot to find, along with bots, security turrets, and ship systems to destroy, so make your path to the ship’s CPU core to shut it down, hard.
First, you usually have to take out the Shield system, which protects the ship’s CPU brain, letting you complete the mission and takeover the ship.
There are alarms that can trigger, locking doors, and spawning drones; thankfully you can find and destroy the alarm system too!
You can also take out the Factory, which spawns drones somewhere on the ship every few minutes, or the Sentry system, shutting down turrets on the ship, or the door system, which unlocked all doors not locked by an alarm.
Mech Space Combat!
The Combat in Gunhead feels fast, mobility focused, and good!
There is a stamina system present, drained by dashing and using your jump thrusters, enabling you to get around the big open environments of the space ships.
You have 4 weapon slots, and 1 item slot, with the ability to find more as you explore and blast your way through the space hulks.
The default weapon 1 is an autoblaster, which fires as long as you hold it down; it uses ammo, and has to recharge after a bit.
Default Weapon 2 is a charging melee attack.
Weapon 3 is random; I got a rocket pod; rockets are limited!
Most of the guns you find have limited ammo, so there is an incentive to find more, as the guns you find in the supply pods will be full of ammo!
There are many alternate weapon systems, like machine guns, autocannons, rocket pods, sticky grenades, motars, and more!
Also remember: You cannot fire while your shield system is up.
Meta Progression:
Meta Progression is present in Gunhead in the form of un-lockable additional weapons, like grenades, sticky grenades, motars, and more that can appear in supply drops; fun!
Found weapons will stay unlocked in between runs as well.
Controller Support is present, as is good old mouse and keyboard.
As an FPS, I found Mouse and Keyboard felt much better here, so that is what I used above.
Note: This is an early look at Gunhead so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Gunhead is a SciFi FPS Dungeon Crawler with Random Lvls, fun guns, and a great combat system that feels fun to play, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
