An Awesome ARPG Diablo like Awaits! – Apoth Demo –
Apoth is an Indie, Hack and Slash, ARPG Diablo like Dungeon Crawler with Random Dungeons, five different difficulty lvls & tons of skills to learn in a classless system, letting you make and play the kind of monster slayer you want.
A Diablo like Dungeon Crawler:
Much like old School Diablo, in Apoth, you can put in 5 Attribute points like in Diablo 1 and Diablo 2; letting the player customize their character’s growth as they play, something sorely lacking from the more recent Diablos…
You can also put in skill points every lvl, like in Diablo 2, but in Apoth, you get 2 skill points per lvl, oh ya!
Also, unlike Diablo, this is a class-less system here, so you are not limited to the 3 or so trees your class has access to; in Apoth, you can spread your skill points across 9 deep skill trees that all feel different, letting you create the kind of freeform monster slayer you want to play.
You want to toss firebolts, heal &drain life from monsters? Go for it!
Another difference, in Apoth, right when you start, you can put in 5 Attribute points; & 2 skill points, as you are lvl 1, not lvl 0, letting the player immediately begin customizing their character right at the start in a RPG is a Very Good Sign!
Like Diablo, Apoth has difficulty lvls, but Apoth doesn’t require you to snore through normal before increasing the difficulty; you can do it right at the start, & there are five of them; wow!
The difficulty lvls really matter, as they change some of the rules of the game.
Items drop on death on all difficulties except effortless.
Lvls above normal have some exp loss on death, but also offer increased exp gains & magic find; along with tougher monsters to fight.
Some conditions do not expire & must be healed on Tough & higher.
Also, there is optional permadeath / iron man, in case that interests you.
You even have the optional ability to auto scale up loot & monsters lvls up if they are at or below 2 lvls behind you; it starts on: I turned that off, as I like to feel stronger then my foes as I begin to out lvl them.
You can also directly increase mob power, from 1 to 10; I set it to 1, making them a bit stronger.
So many options here!
The Dungeon:
In Apoth, the dungeon is the star, with the Random Dungeons filled with threatening monsters, nasty traps & exciting loot, along with secrets to find, mysterious fountains to drink, & many items to craft.
Yep, you can craft, scrape, & repair items directly from your inventory while in the dungeon, removing much of the need to go trucking back to town with a bag full of vender trash.
In Apoth, the trash loot is mostly used to repair & make even better loot!
Also, while inventory Tetris is present, your inventory is very big & generous here, so you have room for a lot of loot!
Nice!
The Monsters:
There are rogues that can shank & poison you, mages that can silence you, enemy priests that can heal your foes & raise the dead.
There are gelatinous cubes that can root you, while their allies surround & pound you down.
The fire golem is very flame resistant, & the one you can learn to summon very durable, and an excellent tank.
The monsters feel threatening, & often attack in groups, making for more interesting fights, and bigger blobs of sweet, sweet exp all at once!
I really like how the monster bodies remain on the dungeon floor, reminding the player of past battles, & serving as a nice visual reminder of which way they have already cleared.
The Traps:
Smash pots & break barrels for coins & potions, always fun, but watch out for the traps!
Traps are present in the Dungeons of Apoth & are very deadly; they are shown in red, if detected…
That’s right, you can detect traps like a rogue, & you get exp for it too!
There are hidden explosive barrel traps best dealt with by bursting barrels from a distance.
Spike traps & Mimics; yes!
There are wall jet flame traps that deal insane damage; 1 hit a lvl 5 bat for 163! Wow!
But don’t worry, as long as you’re not rolling perma death, if you exit the run without having retrieved your dropped items, they will be move to a random part of the map when you play again; very generous of Apoth; other games would simply delete them (looking at you Diablo 2…).
The game also gives you a free checkpoint every new floor, so getting back to your goodies doesn’t take long.
Nasty traps are present on some chests too, & some doors are trapped too; blow open the doors from a distance to be safe!
You can smash open chest & doors too, though it does degrade your weapon, & might break the goodies inside chest; best to use keys if you can.
Note: This is an early look at Apoth so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Apoth is a fun ARPG Diablo like Dungeon Crawler with Random Dungeons & an open ended, class-less skill system that feels great to play, & is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
