An ARPG Dungeon Crawler Dripping With Atmosphere! – Tower of Kalemonvo Demo – #02
Tower of Kalemonvo is an Indie, Isometric, Hack and Slash ARPG: think a retro Diablo like with random dungeons that feel incredible.
Old School ARPG Combat:
Tower of Kalemonvo feels like the first Diablo.
It controls like Diablo 1, with mouse click or click to move, and there is no stamina system here; you walk everywhere, ready for dungeon danger, just like in the original Diablo, adding to the deliberate pace of the game.
Like in Diablo 1, there are named monsters to fight, which are much tougher, and drop much better loot.
The monsters feel really good here, and there are many surprises alongside the expected skeletons and evil cultists.
I will offer a hint: watch out for evil barrels!
And a tip: Use your alt weapon slot for a ranged weapon; as you don’t have access to a town to buy potions, and enemies don’t seem to drop gold, so healing is not often that common; be careful
Also, watch out for the Faceless!
Like Diablo, there are optional difficulty modes, but in Tower of Kalemonvo, you can select them at the start; no need to walk through ‘normal’ mode to get to the nightmare here!
In Tower of Kalemonvo, there are 2 optional difficulty modes you can turn on, right at the start.
Despair Mode: reduced player hp and stat gains per lvl
1 Optional permadeath Ironman mode, with no manual saving and loading; auto-saving only in this mode, offering an excellent option for the hardcore fans of old-school hardcore Diablo play.
Retro Random Dungeons:
Tower of Kalemonvo has randomized dungeons born of Procedural Generation, like Diablo, and also like Diablo 1, the dungeons feel great, and are fun to explore.
The music is very fitting and sets the dungeon crawling mood nicely, and unlike Diablo, here we are ascending the tower, so the lvls get larger as you ascend, not descend.
These dungeons have interesting locations to find that help bring the dungeon to life, and provide some real motivation to the player.
For example, you can find a pool of Enchanter’s Life Blood”, which you can use to enchant an item with a random prefix / suffix; fun.
There is a “Menacing Cauldron” you can find; so spooky!
What it does is give you a healing / mana restore spell, but at a cost of hp or mana of 2 for every third use; powerful and a good deal.
There are Fountains that heal you, which is very handy, as healing can be hard to find if potions are running low.
There are also Bookshelves that hold magic tomes, which teach you a spell; if your intelligence is high enough to learn it.
Finding powerful abilities in dungeons is so refreshing, as many Dungeon Crawlers will only give you power through accumulating exp and item drops, not actually directly providing powerful and interesting abilities for your character.
Like Diablo 1 and 2, Tower of Kalemonvo is not afraid to give the player interesting powers.
Note: This is an early look at the demo for Tower of Kalemonvo so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, with random dungeon lvls just dripping with adventure and atmosphere, Tower of Kalemonvo just feels like a lovingly crafted old school ARPG tribute to the Diablo of old, and is easily well worth a wishlist and a watch.
