Blazer (Arcade)
Blazer, released by Namco in 1987, is an arcade game with a unique structure that alternates between vertical top-down shooting and forward-facing pseudo-3D shooting. Each stage begins as a typical overhead shooter, but upon reaching certain points, the screen shifts into a forward-scrolling perspective. At the time, this switching of viewpoints was seen as an innovative attempt that drew attention.
However, when actually playing the game, the most striking feature is its strict timeout system. If the player slows down even slightly or pauses for a moment, the game immediately registers a timeout and ends. You are forced to keep moving forward at all times, dealing with enemies and obstacles while constantly being aware of the ticking time.
As a result, Blazer conveys less of an exciting tension and more of an oppressive pressure that feels like being rushed. Rather than leaving the impression of fun, the experience often builds up fatigue. Despite its unique presentation and creative ideas, it is remembered more as a tiring game than an enjoyable one.
