11Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion is a classic action-platformer released in 1991 for DOS, which enjoyed great popularity in the PC gaming market at the time. It is a direct sequel to the 1988 game Dangerous Dave, developed by Softdisk and created by early id Software members John Romero, John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, and Tom Hall—making it a historically significant title.
The story begins when Dave’s brother Delbert is kidnapped by mysterious forces and taken to the "Haunted Mansion." This decrepit estate appears abandoned from the outside, but inside lies a twisted world filled with supernatural threats: walking skeletons, zombies, traps, and ghosts. Dave must enter the mansion alone to rescue his brother.
Each room has a different layout with puzzles and traps. Players must find keys, unlock doors, avoid or defeat enemies, and delve deeper into the mansion. The house itself acts like a “trap tower,” with dark hallways, closing doors, red wallpaper, and eerie portraits adding to the tension.
Dave uses a single weapon—a semi-auto shotgun with 8 rounds. Though it reloads automatically, Dave cannot move while reloading, requiring careful planning. Enemies include zombies, ghosts, slimes, and werewolves, each with distinct attack patterns.
The game has 8 levels, with increasing difficulty, requiring precision jumps and timed actions. As stages progress, it hints that Dave is getting closer to Delbert. In the final level, the player saves Delbert under extreme tension.
More than a simple action game, it blends horror atmosphere, survival, and puzzle-solving. Though its story wasn't continued in later titles, this haunted house adventure remains a beloved classic. It’s a must-play for DOS-era retro fans.
