I'm going to be honest with you guys: I'm pretty much going into this one completely blind. The only things I knew about this one is that it's supposed to be another "Soulsvania"... and that KI really, really likes it. In fact, I actually got me this one as a Christmas present. And they also nominated this sucker both in the initial round and in the bonus line-up. And if I recall correctly, this is the third and final game in KI's "Soulsvania Trinity"... and I've already streamed the other two.
My first impressions of Ender Lilies are good, though. The pace is a bit slower than I'm used to, but that kind of fits. But the combat feels very deliberate. It's more akin to Blasphemous than Hollow Knight -- and that's already a plus in my book. There's a learning curve, but dying on a tough boss fight or in an area with a ton of tough enemies doesn't get under my skin. It's just straight up fun. You pretty much have all the tools you need to succeed, you just need to learn how to use them properly. Learn the enemies' tells and weaknesses and exploit them to win. It also doesn't hurt that there are multiple weapons that aren't tied to any sort of stamina/cooldown system.
I also like how you effectively harvest powerful enemies into becoming your weapons, especially how that seems to tie into the lore for this one. I'm wondering why the introduction cinematic didn't play at the start of this one. Maybe I needed to hang out on the title screen for longer than I did? Maybe I somehow skipped it during the setup process to get the game ready for streaming. Either way, I managed to pull it up from the first Respite... so no harm, no foul, right?
It's funny. I usually try to avoid playing other games on days where I plan on streaming at night. That's not how things worked out this time. To make matters worse, it was even in a similar genre to Ender Lilies. Fortunately, I managed to finish up everything -- even got all of the achievements -- so I didn't have any sort of nagging feeling about any unfinished business to drag me down during my stream tonight. Still, it's probably something to avoid in the future.
