Board Game Discussion - Kickstarter Scams, Shams, and Flim-Flams
Kickstarter and I have a sordid history. It's a legitimately amazing platform for small companies, but ends up giving gamers huge unknowns regarding game quality, lead time, and even whether it'll actually happen. Here are some of the worst stories. Enjoy!
I've ragged a good bit on Kickstarter, IndiGoGo, and crowdfunding in general. It's such a hit or miss thing. Thankfully, we've gotten more to the stage where the better, consistent companies are using it to churn out new, great games. At least, in general. Unfortunately, there's always times where a crowdfunding project doesn't end well for anyone - creator or backer alike. Sometimes it's bad money management, poor projections, inaccurate estimations, or other issues. But then there's the WORST. The deliberately awful. Going in with little or no intent to fulfill, abusing designers' contracts, or even using it when totally unneeded.
Today, I go through three main stories about horrid Kickstarter companies and experiences. There's more, to be sure, but these represent some of the worst, in my opinion. In addition, I talk a bit about how we, as a gaming community, can not only help newer gamers, but recognize companies that truly deserve our support. Enjoy, and let me know what you think in the comments!
