Bob Reviews: RAFT
I love this game and I am not sure why. One thing I will note is that it is a huge time suck, which might not be a problem for a lot of people these days but it will absolutely eat time like few things will.
Quick tips:
Always always get every barrel in reach. Each barrel contains many goods and different kinds, so one barrel might have planks, palm leaves and scrap and food. Swim after them if you have to. Also, as soon as you can make a paddle and/or sails, always go for every raft you can reach as they also are chock full of goodies.
Don't be unnecessarily scared of Bruce. If you see a barrel or a raft that is just out of reach of your hook, swim for it. You will need to get into the water in order to get things like sand, clay, stone, scrap, kelp, copper and metal. If you are at an island, try to anchor the raft at a distance from the island and then go to the side of the island opposite the raft: Bruce will usually pay attention to the raft and not as much you since he cannot see you. The basic throwaway anchor requires stone to make.
If you are in the water and Bruce is after you, there is a little hop you can do that increases the chance of him missing you. From underwater, go upwards (using Jump) and then as soon as you are on the surface tap Jump to hop above the surface and then immediately start holding Jump again. In this way you can swim while keeping yourself above surface (and out of Bruce's reach) about a quarter of the time.
Always repair as soon as Bruce noms on your raft. Repairing is cheaper than replacing. Of course, get a spear to fend off Bruce as soon as possible, otherwise he will destroy every part he attacks.
Don't put collectors next to each other, space them one apart. The collectors are like little black holes and will suck in anything close to them, so if they are spaced at least one square apart you will cover more space with fewer collectors. Also the yaw of the vessel is not controllable in the early game, so have them spaced in a U shape around your craft so as to obtain the maximum amount of junk in any orientation you may find yourself in. In the late game you can get steering wheels.
Obviously you won't eat (well) without grills and you won't drink without water distillers. You need one of each as soon as possible. When you can afford it, large grills allow you to cook fish that you can't cook on small grills, like catfish and salmon.
Smelters are something you will need as soon as you can manage. Get clay and sand off sea floors to make wet bricks and then dry the bricks on your deck to get dry bricks. Clay looks like khaki-colored stones and clay looks like the seafloor except it is shaped like a stone. Ideally you will want many smelters as soon as you have the clay and sand for it.
Once you have a smelter, get the metal grappling hook as soon as you can to replace your starter hook. The metal one needs metal ingots to make, it will reach farther but more importantly it will collect stuff from the sea floor in one hit. Important when Brucie is hunting your ass.
Nowhere does it tell you how to use the receiver and antennas, and they are very picky. Receivers and antennas have to be on the second floor or higher (there is no benefit for having them higher) and need to be at least 3 squares away from each other. You can have the receiver be too far away too, just plan on them being 3 squares away from each other on your second floor and you'll be fine. I would say don't have the receiver more than 8 squares away from any of the antennas.
