I hated it at first, but after having returned to the first arena quest in Borderlands 2 I must say it wasn't so punishing and repetitive after all (except for a very annoying bug, which thankfully didn't occur during my second attempt). At the very least, this sequence of increasingly intense shoot-outs turned out to be both less frustrating and a lot more worthile in terms of XP and loot than something like Mad Moxxi's infamous DLC from the original game.
